A blockbuster trade proposal has the Dallas Cowboys sending quarterback Dak Prescott to an AFC contender in a move that would send shockwaves across the NFL.
There aren’t any indicators that the Cowboys are open to trading Dak Prescott. After all, they gave him a four-year contract extension worth $240 million only eight months ago, and that deal begins this season.
But it only takes one out-of-this-world offer for Jerry Jones to change his mind. And as good as Prescott has been in the regular season, the fact remains that he’s won just two playoff games over nine seasons as Dallas’ starter. We’re not talking about an untradeable-level player like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen or Joe Burrow here.
On the latest episode of “The Athletic Football Show”, Robert Mays suggested that Dallas could land three first-round picks in a potential Dak Prescott blockbuster trade:
“Let’s just say you can get under (the financials), the Cowboys would trade Dak for the right price. The Dak, Kyler (Murray) range is probably where I land, I think it’s the right answer.
“If you called the Cowboys right now, again, if they traded him after June 1, in theory it would be possible. If you called the Cowboys right now like ‘we’ll give you three (first-round picks) for Dak, I think they would do it.”
Jon Conahan of Heavy.com argued that Prescott could be the “better option” for the Pittsburgh Steelers than free agent Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to make a decision on his football future:
“For the Steelers, Prescott would be a better option than Rodgers, too, who’s already 41 years old. If all they have to do is give Rodgers around $10 to $15 million, however, it’d be much easier to live with that not working out than trading for Prescott and having him not play the football that they’re hoping for.”
Russell Wilson was about to enter his age-34 season when the Denver Broncos acquired him from the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster deal that included two first-round picks. The Cleveland Browns swung and missed on the Deshaun Watson trade with the Houston Texans that was headlined by a return of three first-rounders.
So it’s not a stretch to suggest that Dallas could get three first-round picks for their franchise quarterback. But again, there’s on indicator that the Cowboys are seeking a divorce at this time.
Prescott and the Cowboys will aim to begin the 2025 season on a high note when they visit the rival Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in the NFL Kickoff Game on Sept. 4.
This will be the second NFL Kickoff Game in five years for the Prescott-led Cowboys, who also opened up the 2021 campaign against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dallas lost that game 31-29 on a last-second Ryan Succop field goal.
