Dallas Cowboys: Reading between the lines (offense)

Dallas Cowboys: Reading between the lines (offense)
Blogging The Boys Blogging The Boys

Every week, we’re digging into the trenches, offense and defense, because that’s where the real action happens. In this installment, we’re shining a spotlight on the offensive line, who’s holding it down, who’s opening holes for the running backs, and who’s keeping Dak Prescott clean. Let’s get to it.

Left Tackle

Tyler Guyton

(2025 Stats: 224 Total Snaps, 153 Pass Blocks, 13 Pressures, 2 QB Hits, 1 Sacks, 4 Penalties)

Dallas’ offensive line got put in the spin cycle during the 31–14 loss in Chicago last week. The entire line had 19 total pressures and Guyton added two costly flags along with one sack allowed, clear signs the edges frayed whenever the game tilted to obvious passing downs.

Through three games, Green Bay ranks top-5 in sacks (10), and Rashan Gary just logged two sacks in Week 3. The Packers also squeezed Cleveland to just ten points in what ended in a 13–10 game, reinforcing that their defense can win field-position games even when the offense is stalling. Expect the usual rush carousel of Gary, Devonte Wyatt on the inside with, of course, Micah Parsons. Parsons ranks third in PFF’s defensive grade among edge defenders.

Dallas needs Guyton to keep his doorframe square, land the first punch, and hand off stunts like a relay. If he does that then Guyton can turn the Packers rush into background noise. Clean tackle-guard pass-offs keep Dallas on schedule, neutralize the rush, and Green Bay’s calling card becomes a stalemate. And that might be just enough to tilt a tight one the Cowboys’ way if Guyton can be execute.

Left Guard

Tyler Smith

(2025 Stats: 224 Total snaps, 153 Pass Blocks, 3 Pressures, 0 QB Hits, 0 Sacks, 2 Penalties)

In the chaos of last week’s game there is some good news, Tyler Smith. His season-to-date has seen his pass pro stay been steady. Across the first three games he’s allowed only three pressures, zero hits, and zero sacks. That’s a profile that usually travels when the games get heavy inside like it will this week.

Smith’s vertical balance and quick hand resets are tailor-made for holding back Green Bay’s pass rush. Sink the post foot like an anchor, land the first jab, and Wyatt’s power rush turns from forklift mode into a tug-of-war with Smith reducing the inside rush like a stuck shopping trolley. As for run stopping, when Smith and Brock Hoffman stay hip-to-hip on inside zone, they can slow Green Bay’s tempo on early downs.

Green Bay’s defense is all about winning straight with their front four. There’s Gary screaming off the edge, Devonte Wyatt denting the inside gaps and the blitz stays on a diet. That puts the bullseye on Smith as the slide anchor and an extremely important piece of this puzzle. If Smith stays effective like he has been to the start the year, anchors with ferocity, then the Packers’ pass rush plan can be halted.
