Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons requested a trade on Friday, stating that he no longer wanted to play for the franchise after a lack of progress in contract negotiations. Now, team owner Jerry Jones has responded to the demand.

Speaking to reporters, Jones downplayed Parsons’ trade demand and his statement that he no longer wanted to play for Dallas. In the eyes of the Cowboys’ owner, it’s all part of the negotiation process.

“I think the world of Micah, and that [request] is just a part of negotiation.”

Jones is correct; this is all part of the negotiating process. The Cowboys owner certainly didn’t help matters last month when he incorrectly stated how many games the All-Pro edge rusher missed last season. He also used that to take a shot at several other players on the Cowboys’ roster.

Immediately after Parsons publicly requested a trade, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that Dallas has zero interest in even entertaining the idea of moving him. The franchise is committed to keeping him, even if the perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate isn’t happy right now.

Just a few months ago, Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett requested a trade and said he only wanted to play for a Super Bowl contender. A few weeks later, he signed a multi-year extension to make $40 million per year on a team with one of the worst NFL rosters in 2025.

The Cowboys’ history under Jones provides ample evidence that a long-term extension with Parsons will be worked out. While the public back-and-forth can get ugly and generate a lot of headlines, negotiations still get done, and Parsons will likely have a multi-year extension in place worth $43-plus million annually by the time Week 1 arrives.
