There are many fair critiques to be made of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, both from fans of the team and those who root against him.
But one thing that cannot be questioned, for better or worse, is Jones’ loyalty.
Jones has shown that loyalty, especially to star players and coaches whom he liked, for several decades, oftentimes to a detriment.
In 2008, Jones and the Cowboys traded for Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones from the Tennessee Titans.
The younger Jones was a star at West Virginia and a first-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. But off-field struggles sent his career down the wrong path.

Pacman Jones was suspended for multiple games in the 2008 season for an altercation at a Dallas hotel. He also suffered a broken neck in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After the season, Jerry Jones broke the news to the young cornerback that he had to release him after Cowboys officials learned that Jones was a suspect in a June 2007 shooting outside a strip club in Atlanta.
However, he also made a promise.
According to Pacman Jones, who recently appeared on Johnny Manziel’s Glory Daze podcast, Jerry Jones told Pacman Jones that he would keep the severity of his neck injury a secret.
“I’m like, ‘look, if you’re cutting me there’s two thigs I’ma need you to do,'” Pacman Jones told Manzeil. “What people didn’t really know, though, I broke my neck when I played with the Cowboys.
“…Jerry brought me into the office, he’s like ‘Look man, I gotta cut you. But I really don’t want to cut you … I want you to take care of your body, man.'”
Pacman Jones then asked for two things from Jerry Jones: Always take care of him, and don’t let the league know that he had a broken neck.
Jones then sat out the entire 2009 season before returning to the NFL in 2010 with the Cincinnati Bengals. He went on to play eight seasons in Cincinnati, including a Pro Bowl season in 2015.
He said that the Bengals never had any idea about his neck injury, stating that Jones kept his promise.
