Each team in the National Football League will have to be down to a final 53-man roster by 4pm ET on Tuesday, August 26th which means that the Dallas Cowboys are on the verge of putting together their group that will charge into the regular season.
It is important to note that while a “final” roster is due by Tuesday’s deadline, the group Dallas has will likely not be fully finalized. There will be several bits of “roster gymnastics” that the Cowboys have to play as they tinker with the roster to be fully ready for the season.
For example’s sake let us consider Jonathan Mingo. During the second week of the preseason Mingo suffered an injury that will set him back 4-6 weeks. Dallas may want to place him on injured reserve to start the season, where all players must miss at least four games, but in order for him to have that eligibility to return he must be on the initial roster for a day before being placed on IR. While this is true, the Cowboys are allowed to place two players on IR before roster finalizations who would be allowed to return, but only two. As you can see, things can and will get complicated in the immediate fallout of everything. Expect the Cowboys to “cut” players who they will bring back a day later after proper things have been sorted.
We will be tracking all roster cuts as they happen and offering information that may be useful about them along the lines of what is listed above. Make sure to come back to this post as we get closer to Tuesday’s deadline.
