🏈 The New York Jets scored over 30 points and held the ball for over 34 minutes in Sunday’s 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to today, the Jets were 53-1 in those situations, according to Football Perspective. The one loss was also on opening day, with Aaron Glenn on the team, against the San Francisco 49ers in 1998 in the Garrison Hearst game, according to Football Perspective.
🏈 Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger thinks fans and the media need to hold off on judging the defense.
“Getting Derrick Harmon back will be huge. You drafted him for that reason. Until your whole team’s out there, I wouldn’t rush to judge on it,” Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin podcast. “But at the end of the day, they got a win. I think you have to rest your hat on that a little bit. Now, if we start seeing trends, 30 points, 150-yard rusher every week, let’s see the man in mirror.”
🏈 NFL Films broke down Aaron Rodgers’ two touchdowns in the second half against the Jets. Three of Rodgers’ four touchdowns came off play-action. In fact, his 22-yard touchdown pass to Ben Skowronek and 18-yarder to Calvin Austin III were the exact same plays.
🏈 ESPN’s Dan Graziano isn’t fully sold on the Steelers.
“I mean … really? Yes, 34 points is great. But this was a long way from a playoff game, and the Steelers took advantage of some serious gifts. The Jets outgained them 394 yards to 271, committed seven penalties and produced the game’s only turnover at a pivotal time. And the Steelers still needed a 60-yard field goal to win,” Graziano said. “Play that game in Buffalo, Baltimore or Kansas City in January, and you ain’t winning it. Be encouraged that this Steelers offense might be more consistently productive and exciting than in 2024, but don’t be sold. And don’t gloss over the fact that the defense, which is supposed to be the constant in Pittsburgh, couldn’t stop Fields and the Jets. Rodgers hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2020 season, and he’ll be 42 when this year’s playoffs start. Great game, great start, but it will take a lot more for me to be convinced that the Steelers can reverse their recent trend of playoff fizzle-outs.”
🏈 The Jets released wide receiver/returner Xavier Gipson on Wednesday. Gipson lost a key fumble in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers.
🏈 Rich Gannon thinks Rodgers can still beat defenses with his arm and brain.
🏈 Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radios said Aaron Rodgers is alive and well after leading the Steelers to a huge week one win over the Jets.
“Aaron Rodgers was absolutely vintage,” Schein said.
