Cris Collinsworth took some heat on Sunday night, with his supposed Patrick Mahomes obsession rearing its head.

The NBC Sports commentator didn’t get to see Mahomes play on Sunday night. He was calling a game between the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, but the Kansas City Chiefs QB’s name came up anyway.

Of course, it’s commonplace to compare good quarterbacks to better ones. But, given Collinsworth’s history with Mahomes and the Chiefs, the internet was never going to let him slide.

The announcer likened a Brock Purdy touchdown throw to something Mahomes would do after the Niners QB beat two defenders in the red zone and found Kyle Juszczyk for a score.

The TD put the home team up 35-28. And Collinsworth’s description of the play came off the way only he could fashion it.

“Brock Purdy was drafted when they were cleaning up the joint. But here he is, cleaning up the Bears so far tonight,” he remarked.

He then went on to say, “I mean, if this were Patrick Mahomes, we’d be screaming ‘Oh Patrick Mahomes!’ I know I would be…”

Purdy and the 49ers held on for a 42-38 win in what was a thriller of a contest.
