The Cowboys are “exploring” adding a running back, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who reports they hosted free agent Zamir White for a recent workout.
The Dolphins worked out White in late May, but the 26-year-old remains without a deal over three months after hitting the open market in March. White spent his first four years in Las Vegas, which drafted him in the fourth round in 2022. The former Georgia Bulldog ran for 736 yards on 198 carries (3.7 YPC) and scored two touchdowns as a Raider. He also chipped in 25 catches for 152 yards.
White was at his most productive in 2023, during which he acted as the Raiders’ No. 2 back behind Josh Jacobs. He set career highs in carries (104), yards (451), YPC (4.3), catches (15) and receiving yards (98). Jacobs left to join the Packers on a four-year, $48MM deal in the ensuing offseason, but White was unable to claim the starting job in the wake of his departure. Injuries limited White to eight games in 2024, and he averaged an ineffective 2.8 yards per carry on 65 attempts when he was healthy enough to play.
The Raiders drafted workhorse Ashton Jeanty sixth overall a year ago, leading to a significant decline in usage for White in 2025. Jeanty amassed 266 carries as a rookie, while White finished with just 12 and averaged 2.7 yards per attempt over six games. The Raiders, who drafted a new Jeanty backup in fourth-rounder Mike Washington Jr. this spring, have shown no reported interest in re-signing White.
Landing a contract with the Cowboys would give White an opportunity to battle for a roster spot behind starter Javonte Williams. The Cowboys’ current backup options include 2025 fifth-rounder Jaydon Blue, Malik Davis and Phil Mafah, Those three combined for 95 carries last year. The bulk of the work went to Davis, who averaged an impressive 4.8 yards on 52 attempts. He turned in a 20-carry, 103-yard performance in a Christmas Day win over the Commanders.
