Deuce Vaughn had a good day on Wednesday.
The second day of training camp is in the books, and it featured a lot more activity than the first day. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens showed off their bond, the offensive line had several standout moments, and we even had our first scuffle of camp. Here’s some quick stock updates from the second practice.
Kaiir Elam
The Cowboys need someone to step up at cornerback with Jourdan Lewis now in Jacksonville and Trevon Diggs’ health unclear. That’s why they traded for Kaiir Elam, a former first-round pick of the Bills.
Elam had made several big plays throughout OTA’s and minicamp, but he still needed to build on it coming to Oxnard. Through two days, he’s done just that.
Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Elam is in a critical juncture of his career. So far, he’s looking like the player Buffalo thought they were getting, and that’s huge for both Elam and the Cowboys.
Deuce Vaughn
After getting a mention in the Stock Up portion in yesterday’s practice report, Deuce Vaughn continued his positive momentum. The small running back keeps turning heads, and on Wednesday he saw ample work with the second team.
That’s huge for Vaughn, who has been considered by many to be an afterthought in this crowded running back competition. However, two straight days have pointed to the possibility that the coaching staff has a much higher opinion of Vaughn, and he’s done nothing to dissuade them of that yet.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens
What are we going to call this duo? After Wednesday, it’s clear that a moniker will be needed for CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, who both made plenty of plays in practice. Not only that, but the two already have a very close relationship.
Brian Schottenheimer
So far, Brian Schottenheimer has aced every test for Cowboys fans. His answers have inspired hope and his interactions with players have pointed to an elite ability to build relationships. But how would he handle conflict?
We got our answer Wednesday when a scuffle broke out among players.
Schottenheimer dressed down the team and made it clear that he wants energy and competition, but that the players also need to control themselves and not hurt each other. It was yet another encouraging moment for the first-time head coach in balancing the line between physicality and caution.
Jerry Jones
Jerry Jones has taken a beating in the headlines the last few days, not that he’s likely to care much. His pointed comments on both Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs on Monday elicited some strong reactions, and both players’ responses on Tuesday didn’t help.
Wednesday brought some comments from Lamb, who was more measured but still made it clear where he stands.
Of course, it won’t matter in the long run, so long as Parsons gets his contract extension and Diggs is able to get back on the field. But it’s...
