Cowboys sign CB Michael Ojemudia ahead of preseason finale

Fresh off a stint with the DC Defenders of the United Football League, cornerback Michael Ojemudia is now a Dallas Cowboy. A former third-round pick by the Denver Broncos, Ojemudia joins Dallas a few days out from their final 2025 preseason game. Is he just a body for this last August outing, or could he be competitive for a roster spot?

The Broncos drafted Ojemudia 77th overall in 2020. He started 11 games and played in all 16, showing well for a rookie, especially with his four forced fumbles. But Denver loaded up on CB talent the following year, signing two veteran free agents and drafting Patrick Surtain II in the first round. Ojemudia was slated to be on the depth chart but got injured during the preseason and missed nearly the entire year. The same occurred in 2022, and he was waived late into the season.

2021 was the last time that Ojemudia appeared in an NFL game. Since then, he’s been on a few different practice squads. He was with the Bears for their 2023 training camp, playing under Dallas’ new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and DB coach David Overstreet II. He must have stayed on their radar from that time, and is now with the Cowboys after a solid showing in the UFL.

No, he’s not Stephon Gilmore or Xavien Howard (who just signed with the Colts this morning). While some Cowboys fans have been clamoring for a veteran addition to the CB room, Dallas seems to be leaning on the eventual returns of injured players Trevon Diggs, Caelen Carson, Shavon Revel Jr., and Josh Butler to bolster the position. As such, the signing of a low-profile guy like Ojemudia feels closer to a preseason finale fill-in than a meaningful 2025 addition.

Still, if those injured corners aren’t going to be ready for Week 1, there’s an opportunity for Ojemudia to at least compete for a temp job. Beyond DaRon Bland, Kaiir Elam, and probably Israel Mukuamu, the rest of the CB depth chart feels up for grabs. Contenders like Kemon Hall, Andrew Booth, Troy Pride Jr., and Zion Childress are hardly locks at this point. If Ojemudia can make a quick impression, already having a little history with the key coaches, then who knows?

Of course, Michael Ojemudia may just be here because the Cowboys want to protect someone else who’s already in their 2025 plans. Either way, we’ll probably see what the former third-rounder has to offer on Friday night against the Falcons.
