The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff has been round into form since hiring Brain Schottenheimer.
He went right to work putting together a staff that at this point doesn’t look half bad.
The head coach is a question mark, but a lot of Cowboy fans seem to like what they are doing elsewhere with Matt Eberflus as the defensive coordinator and adding Klayton Adams as the offensive coordinator.
In case you missed it this weekend, they also added a new defensive backs coach, David Overstreet II.
He has only been coaching for a few years, so like me, I am sure many don’t know much about him.
Overstreet coached the Bears’ nickelbacks in 2024, so he was brought over by Eberflus more than likely.
He began his NFL coaching career as a defensive quality control coach for the Colts from 2018-20 before a promotion to assistant defensive backs coach. Overstreet went to Chicago with Eberflus in 2022, where he spent two seasons as assistant defensive backs coach before overseeing the nickelbacks.
Before he started his coaching career, he was a four-year starter at safety for the Missouri Tigers, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors on multiple occasions. He eventually went undrafted.
He got his start in coaching when he got a gig with Holmes Community College in Mississippi. Overstreet then moved to Garden City Community College in Kansas, before finally getting his NFL break.
As the current staff moves away from most of the guys who were here when Mike McCarthy was the head coach, that included Jeff Blasko, the running backs coach.
With that said, after the hire of Adams, they now have two offensive guys both in him and Schoty that want to run the ball.
The Cowboys are interviewing Oregon running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples for the same role on Brian Schottenheimer’s staff.
Samples has only been with Oregon since last summer.
He was hired away from Arizona State where he was the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator for the Sun Devils. Samples also previously coached in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams as their running backs coach in 2022.
The Cowboys also interviewed a familiar face, but I don’t expect him to take the type of payout he would have to in order to join the Dallas staff.
Tashard Choice was also given a interview for the same role. He was a fourth-round pick in 2008, spent four seasons with the Cowboys. He also played for Washington, Buffalo, and Indianapolis during a six-year playing career.
His coaching career began in 2016, as an intern with the Cowboys. He then took a job at North Texas before returning to Georgia Tech, where he played college football, in 2019. In 2022,
Choice was hired to coach running backs at Texas. While there he has coached Jahymr Gibbs (2020-21), Bijan Robinson (2022), and Jonathan Brooks (2023).
Pretty good company.
So again, regardless of who they add as the running backs coach, they most...
