He wasn’t the first former Chicago Bears head coach to land a job this coaching cycle — Thomas Brown was hired by the New England Patriots as their tight ends coach/pass game coordinator yesterday — but the Dallas Cowboys are hiring Matt Eberflus as their defensive coordinator.
Eberflus was fired by the Bears following his Thanksgiving deer-in-the-headlights finish against the Detroit Lions, and he ended with a 14-32 record over his two-plus years in Chicago. His tenure in the Windy City was full of late-game mishaps, strange challenges, assistant coach turnover, and awkward press conferences. To be fair, he also handed out some fun nicknames and had a glow-up.
He was hired by the Bears after serving as defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021, and before that, he was the linebackers coach in Dallas from 2011 to 2017.
Eberflus was also the defensive playcaller for the Bears following Alan Williams’ resignation in September of 2023, so he’ll be stepping into a familiar situation with the Cowboys.
The Bears will play the Cowboys in Soldier Field this season, so fans will have a chance to tell him what they thought of his time wearing the script “B” hat.
