Blogging The Boys
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to make changes to their coaching staff with focus being on the defensive side of the ball.
No reporter or insider has come out and said it in a point-blank sort of way, but the heavy insinuation for a while has been that the Cowboys will likely do something about defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. The Cowboys have fielded one of the worst defenses in franchise history this season and the logical fall guy for that is Eberflus.
To be clear, labeling Eberflus as purely a fall guy would be unfair. He has had a very heavy hand in the defense being as poor as it has been by refusing to change his scheme and style. That decision has certainly been costly.
In the interest of fairness though, it will always be fair to note that Eberflus had his best defensive player traded away a week before the season began. While the Cowboys also traded for Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson (although the latter is a story in itself with how sparingly the Cowboys have played him), the Micah Parsons story and trade dominated and then sucked all of the energy out of the season in many respects. Again, it is simply fair context.
Whether or not Eberflus is the exact change or switch the Cowboys make remains to be seen. Jerry Jones has noted, also fairly, that he is the team’s third defensive coordinator in as many years (something he has taken ownership of given that this was mostly due to his decision-making). There is an argument, not a very good one to be clear, to keep continuity and avoid a fourth in four years, but change is indeed arguably more necessary than continuity.
