One of the big storylines for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason has been the contract situation of wide receiver George Pickens, who signed a franchise tag with the team in March. Pickens has now reported to the team’s mandatory minicamp this week, ending speculation that he might hold out in hopes of a new long-term contract.
Now, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has spoken out on the attendance of the star wide receiver.
“Great visits with George. He’s fired up to be back,” said Schottenheimer, per Jon Machota of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.
Machota also reported that “…Schottenheimer said George Pickens won’t do everything during today’s minicamp. He won’t participate in team drills.”
“Brian Schottenheimer said George Pickens will be ‘coach Pickens’ this week, as he’ll be brought along slowly,” added Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News on X.
Pickens played like a star for the Cowboys last season, more than holding down the fort in the prolonged injury absence of CeeDee Lamb and helping Dak Prescott have a borderline MVP-caliber season at quarterback for the team. Unfortunately, the Cowboys’ defense did not come along for the ride, and the team ended up missing out on the playoffs for the second straight year as a result.
The Cowboys will hope that their draft selections, including safety Caleb Downs, will help rectify that side of the ball this year, all while Pickens, Prescott, and the offense keep producing at an elite level similar to last year.
The Cowboys’ 2026 season will get underway in early September.
