Cowboys at Eagles inactives: Trevon Diggs in, Mazi Smith out

We are now under 90 minutes from kickoff of the first game of the NFL’s 106th season, featuring a showdown between the Cowboys, in their first game of the Brian Schottenheimer era, and the Eagles, who are set to unveil their Super Bowl banner. And now we know who will and won’t be suiting up for the game.

The headliner here is Trevon Diggs. After spending all preseason working off to the side in the rehab group, and controversially being docked pay for not working out with the team in the offseason, many presumed Diggs would start the year with some sort of injury designation. Not only was he on the active roster following final cuts, but Diggs is now active and set to make his season debut tonight.

The other headliner is Mazi Smith, the first round pick from 2023. After an unimpressive preseason that saw rising chatter about potentially being a surprise cut, Smith is now inactive to start the season. His healthy scratch designation is at least partially motivated by the recent acquisition of Kenny Clark, part of the shocking Micah Parsons trade.

Also inactive for the Cowboys are Jaydon Blue, Shemar James, Ajani Cornelius, Hakeem Adeniji, Trevor Keegan, and Perrion Winfrey, the latter of whom was ruled out earlier this week with a back injury. Blue is a bit of a surprise, though he was unlikely to see much playing time in this one due to having missed a chunk of training camp with an injury he’s since recovered from.

As for the Eagles, their inactives list is fairly unsurprising, with several reserve players being marked as healthy scratches. Notably, starters Landon Dickerson and Jalen Carter are both active despite popping up on the injury report earlier this week.
