Blogging The Boys
Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys loss was embarrassing on a number of levels. The defense chose to not show up once more, and this time the offense couldn’t save them. It was a failure on just about every level and resulted in a score that made the Denver Broncos feel quite proud of themselves.
You are well aware that the Cowboys are one of the worst defenses in NFL history to date, but those types of statements sound like exaggeration and hyperbole. Thanks to the offerings of Stathead and Pro Football Reference we can prove these unfortunately-not-outlandish claims.
Here are this week’s Historical Notes. Brace yourselves.
There are 15 total defenses in NFL history who allowed 250 points and 3,200 yards against them through the first eight games of their season. They are not alone here in 2025, but this year’s version of the team is on the list.
This year’s Cincinnati Bengals have made sure that the Cowboys have company, but relative to the past Matt Eberflus’ bunch sits alone in franchise history. They are the only Cowboys team on this list which is not good!
Sunday marked the fifth time this season that the Cowboys defense has been had for at least 30 points and 385 total yards against them. The games in question if you are curious are the Giants, Bears, Packers, Bears, and obviously Broncos contests.
Through only eight games on the season the Cowboys have done this five times, tied for the third-most instances overall on a season in franchise history. The company they are keeping is not great in 2013, 2010, and 2020.
It stands to reason the 2025 group will own this “record” before the season is all said and done.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix threw for four touchdowns on Sunday against the Cowboys. That has become pretty normal, although not quite that specific level to be clear.
This is a list of seasons for the Cowboys as you can see. Each one holds the number of instances in which an opposing quarterback threw for just three touchdowns against that specific team’s defense across the season at large.
Let me be very clear here.
This year’s Cowboys team has allowed the quarterback they are facing to toss a hat trick’s worth of touchdowns five times (they have only played eight games!). That is already tied for the second-most instances across an entire season in franchise history.
So far this season, not including the Week 8 Monday night game, there have been 11 instances of an NFL offense having 40+ points and 400+ total yards in a single game.
You can see that the Cowboys offense is responsible for three of these performances. Only the Buffalo Bills also have multiple offensive appearances.
