Nine days after announcing his retirement, former quarterback Will Grier has already lined up his next job in the NFL. The 31-year-old is returning to Dallas to join Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer‘s staff as an offensive assistant, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.
This does not come as a surprise, as Grier almost retired after the season to work for Schottenheimer. The North Carolina native put off the inevitable, though, and decided to sign with the Panthers in April. It was the second Panthers stint for Grier, who first joined the team as a third-round pick in 2019. The former Florida and West Virginia signal-caller remained in Carolina for two seasons, but he started just two games (both in his rookie year) and struggled.
Grier went just 28 of 52 for 228 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions as Panther. The team cut Grier ahead of the 2021 season, leading the Cowboys to claim him on waivers. Grier stayed in the organization for two years, but he did not see any regular-season action. He continued to go without regular-season time in short runs with the Patriots, Bengals, Chargers and Eagles over the next couple of years.
Grier reunited with the Cowboys in late 2024, Schottenheimer’s second year as their offensive coordinator, and spent all of last season on their practice squad. Dallas released Grier in March, but it is clear he formed an important connection with Schottenheimer over the past couple of years. Now an assistant to Schottenheimer and coordinator Klayton Adams, Grier will begin his coaching career working with a high-powered offense that ranked second in yards and seventh in points in 2025.
