The updates from Cowboys training camp

The Dallas Cowboys returned to their training camp work on Saturday, and it was marked by some noteworthy developments on both sides of the ball. The injury-beleaguered cornerback position appears closer to getting back two significant players, while a roster contender at wide receiver may have suffered a setback.

Heading into Oxnard, we knew that corners Trevon Diggs, Josh Butler, and Shavon Revel would all be missing from action with various injuries. But Saturday offered some encouraging news for two of them.

Obviously, Revel getting in as much work as possible ahead of his rookie season is a positive. But even back during the draft, when a college knee injury caused him to fall to the third round, it was generally expected that Revel could be ready by Week 1. So while we’re delighted to see that his recovery seems to be going well, it’s not that shocking.

Getting Butler back this quickly would be more of a surprise. Getting hurt last Thanksgiving, the 28-year-old was doubtful to return for the start of the regular season. Butler was an emerging role-player last year, starting three games due to injuries and looking like he could hold his own. Dallas would love to have the veteran competing before the end of preseason, with CB depth still a critical concern for 2025.

Unfortunately, all of Saturday’s injury news wasn’t positive. Veteran wide receiver Parris Campbell, one of the top contenders for a final spot on the depth chart, went down with what could be a blow to his roster chances.

Dallas signed Campbell, a 2019 second-round pick by the Colts, to a minimal one-year deal last March. He’s battled injuries throughout his career, only playing a full schedule once in 2022.

Campbell’s prospects with the Cowboys already took a hit when they traded for George Pickens in May. If he misses time now, that’s just more opportunities for Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks, Traeshon Holden, and other contenders. And with the top five of Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, Jonathan Mingo, and KaVontae Turpin feeling solid, there may not even be a roster spot for the rest of the pack.

All other factors aside, we certainly hope the best for Parris Campbell when it comes to this injury. As for Shavon Revel and Josh Butler, both have real potential to be contributors in 2025. Saturday’s updates offer real encouragement for a deeper, stronger CB position this season.
