Here are some defensive players the Cowboys could look to target in free agency.

After naming Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, the Dallas Cowboys still have a lot of work to do filling out their coaching staff before free agency officially kicks off on March 12. Between now and then though, there will be a lot of guesstimating and speculation as to which free agency Cowboys could potentially be targeting.

While there are roster “needs” on both sides of the ball, as things stand right now the Cowboys defense has some specific needs to fill. Today, we’re going to identify one defensive free agent at each position Dallas could consider signing in free agency.

DT - Osa Odighizuwa

Defensive tackle is a position the Cowboys seem to prefer to bargain shop, but considering Osa Odighizuwa is one of their own and they like to re-sign their own, there's a good chance he receives a long-term extension. Dallas desperately needs more DT help and the familiarity they have with Odighizuwa could make him their top target depending on price.

DE - DeMarcus Lawrence

DeMarcus missed the majority of 2024 after sustaining a Lisfranc injury in Week 4, but up until that point he racked up three sacks, four tackles for loss, a forced fumbles, and five QB hits in just one month. Unless he's looking to sign with a legit Super Bowl contender, there could be mutual interest between him and the Cowboys to continue his career in Dallas.

LB - Nick Bolton

Nick Bolton is arguably the best middle linebacker the Cowboys could sign via free agency to help improve their run defense. Much like Eric Kendricks last year, Bolton would provide much-needed experience to Dallas' young LB core and immediately upgrade the unit as well. He's a little stiff in coverage, but an absolute bruiser coming downhill in the run game.

CB - Paulson Adebo

Paulson Adebo missed most of the 2024 season with a broken femur, but is expected to be good to go by training camp. That injury could impact his market value and quite possibly make him more willing to accept a one-year "prove it" deal in hopes of the better long-term contract in 2026. He'd immediately add much-needed competition in Dallas.

S - Tre'von Moehrig

It was rumored Dallas was targeting Moehrig in the second-round in 2021, but the Raiders beat them to the punch by trading ahead of them. Now a free agent, the Cowboys could target him to hopefully upgrade the backend of their secondary. Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker could quite possibly become salary-cap casualties.
