History

Emeka Egbuka was born on October 14, 2002, in Tacoma, Washington, and grew up in DuPont attending Steilacoom High School in Steilacoom. Egbuka’s Nigerian heritage comes from his father, Henry Egbuka, who immigrated to the United States from Nigeria when he was 20 years old. At Steilacoom High School, Egbuka established himself as one of the nation’s top football prospects. Over his high school career, Egbuka totaled 199 receptions for nearly 4,000 yards and 61 touchdowns. He was a two-sport athlete, excelling in baseball as a center fielder, an experience he credits with sharpening his ability to track and catch passes. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington moved its 2020 football season to spring 2021, but Egbuka opted to forgo his senior year to enroll early at Ohio State.

Rated a consensus five-star recruit by major scouting services like 247Sports, Egbuka was the number one wide receiver and number nine overall player in the 2021 recruiting class. He committed to Ohio State in 2021 and made an immediate impact as a freshman, primarily on special teams. He returned 20 kickoffs for 580 yards, averaging 29 yards per return, leading the Big Ten and ranking 12th nationally. His receiving stats were modest that year, with nine catches for 191 yards, including an 85-yard reception against Akron, the third-longest pass play in school history.

His breakout season came as a sophomore in 2022, stepping into a starting role alongside Marvin Harrison Jr. after Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s injury-limited year. Egbuka caught 74 passes for 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 15.6 yards per reception, and added 87 rushing yards with two scores. His 1,151 receiving yards rank sixth in a single season in Ohio State history, narrowly ahead of Cris Carter’s 1,127 in 1986.

In 2023, Egbuka’s junior year was hampered by an ankle injury sustained against Maryland. After undergoing a medical procedure, he missed three games and returned at less than full strength, finishing with 41 catches for 515 yards and four touchdowns. Despite the setback, he was named third-team All-Big Ten.

As a senior, Egbuka reestablished himself as a key leader in a revamped Buckeye offense. He had 81 receptions for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns in the 2024 season. On January 20, 2025, in the national championship game against Notre Dame, he broke K.J. Hill’s school record of 201 career receptions with his 202nd catch. His career totals stood at 205 receptions, 2,868 yards, and 24 touchdowns, placing him second in program history in receiving yards behind Michael Jenkins (2,898).
