Robert Newhouse played for the Dallas Cowboys for 12 seasons and was selected in the second round of the draft out of the University of Houston. Known for his powerful, compact build and relentless running style, Newhouse was a fan favorite and a vital part of the Cowboys’ offense during the 1970s. Primarily used as a fullback, he was a tough blocker and dependable runner, helping the Cowboys reach three Super Bowls and win Super Bowl XII. Despite coaches calling him undersized, Newhouse proved all his critics wrong with his blend of quickness and elusive style running which was capable of surprising even the most agile of defenders. Sadly, Newhouse passed away in 2014 while waiting for heart surgery, leaving behind his wife and four children.
Best known for:
Newhouse was best known for his bruising running style, but also for throwing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Golden Richards in Super Bowl XII. The play is still viewed as one of the most iconic trick plays in Cowboys and NFL history.
Lesser known fact:
Newhouse’s tree-trunk thighs measured over 44 inches, earning him nicknames like “The Human Bowling Ball” and contributing to his incredible balance and power between the tackles.
