Doug Cosbie played tight end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1979 to 1988 after being drafted in the third round out of Santa Clara University. Emerging as a reliable and athletic pass-catcher, Cosbie became a favorite target of quarterback Danny White throughout the 1980s. He led the team in receptions for three consecutive seasons (1983–1985) and was selected to three Pro Bowls. Cosbie finished his career with 300 receptions, 3,728 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns. He remains one of the most productive tight ends in franchise history and still ranks third among tight ends for Dallas in receptions, touchdowns and yards.
Best known for:
Cosbie was best known for being one of the top receiving tight ends of the 1980s, leading the Cowboys in catches for multiple seasons and helping stretch the field in Tom Landry’s offense.
Lesser known fact:
Before reaching the NFL, Cosbie almost chose a basketball career. He was an accomplished high school basketball player and briefly considered the game as his main sport before committing fully to football.
