Ed “Too Tall” Jones played defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1974 to 1989, spending his entire 15-year NFL career (with a one year gap) with the team. Standing at 6-foot-9, he was one of the tallest players in league history and a dominant force on the defensive line.
Selected first overall in the 1974 NFL Draft, Jones became a key figure in the Doomsday Defense, earning three Pro Bowl selections and helping Dallas win Super Bowl XII. His size, strength, and consistency made him one of the most feared pass rushers of his era.
Best known for:
Jones was best known for his ability to disrupt passing lanes with his height, often batting down passes, and for being a cornerstone of the Cowboys’ defense during their Super Bowl runs.
Lesser known fact:
In 1979, Jones temporarily left football to pursue a professional boxing career, compiling a 6–0 record with five knockouts before returning to the Cowboys in 1980, an unusual detour that showcased his athletic versatility and competitive drive.
