Could the Rams bring back Von Miller in 2025?

Von Miller, a 2x Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl L MVP, 3x first team All-Pro, and 4x second team All-Pro still remains a free agent in the National Football League. The talented veteran surprisingly has yet to sign with a team even after posting a 82.4 PFF grade in 2024 (15th out of 211 qualifying edge rushers).

The Rams do not have a pressing need for an edge rusher with Jared Verse, Byron Young, Josiah Stewart, and Brennan Jackson on the roster. However, Los Angeles is very young on defense and could benefit from adding veteran leadership. Back in 2021, the Rams traded for Von Miller; sending the Denver Broncos a second round pick. Von Miller would help propel the LA Rams to a LVI Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Von Miller turned out to be a significant influence on Aaron Donald and the rest of the Rams defense.

Former Defensive Line coach Eric Henderson stated:

“AD has always been vocal amongst the defensive line group,” Henderson told FOX Sports. “But Von brought experience to the group, having been on a Super Bowl team and understanding the little things that it takes and how important a voice like AD would carry amongst our defense and amongst the team. … It’s paid off for us, and it’s just been genuine. It’s been a natural leadership role [for Donald]. It hasn’t been anything that’s been forced by AD. He’s just found his voice, really staying genuine in his approach, and guys have really taken to that.”

With so many young defensive players on the roster in 2025, Von Miller could fill a void for Chris Shula’s defense.

As of right now, the Rams do seem content with who they have on the depth chart. However, keep in mind that LA uses a cheetah package for their defense at a reasonable rate. That means, LA would employ three edge rushers on the field at once. Last year, this package featured Jared Verse, Byron Young, and Michael Hoecht. The Josiah Stewart draft selection in April filled that spot going into training camp. But if for some reason, one of the edge rushers gets hurt or Young/Stewart struggle in the first half of the season, the Rams could look to adding a player of Miller’s caliber.

Despite being 35 years of age, Miller did generate 32 pressures on the quarterback last year in just 209 pass rushing snaps (15%). That is a respectable number for a Buffalo Bills defensive unit that struggled to get to the quarterback all year. And for comparison sake, Michael Hoecht only generated 23 pressures in 227 pass rushing snaps (10%). Playing with LA’s young unit could create more opportunities for Miller.

Make no mistake, I am aware that Von Miller is at the twilight of his career. His overall production has dropped since 2018 due to an ankle injury in 2020 and...
