Not all hope is lost but the Browns 2025 season will have to shock many

Going into the 2025 season, the Cleveland Browns are filled with unknowns.

Last season was a disaster for many reasons, considering how many believed that team would take that leap into contending for a potential Super Bowl. The offense was a mess, and the defense took a step back, leading the Browns to make coaching changes.

Fast forward to now, the roster makeup is different, with it containing young players who are eager to prove themselves. If you look at the over/under for the win totals for this season, currently the Browns sit at 4.5. Seems low, but considering how the roster is not better than it was last season and considering how their schedule is going to be difficult to start, it’s not a surprise.

However, if you have seen how the NFL is, there is at least one team that overachieves. Why not Cleveland?

Defense could get back to elite form in 2023.

Going back to the 2023 season, the Browns defense was elite in every metric, whether it was basic or advanced. The unit took a step back (which was expected), but it was a solid unit in 2024.

When it comes to the interior defensive line, the unit has improved with the team drafting rookie defensive tackle Mason Graham. As a whole, the defensive line might be the strongest unit of the entire defense. The interior has been shored up, and as far as the edge rushers go, the unit has depth at that position with Myles Garrett at the top.

The linebacker room is slightly better, but with linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah being out for the season (and possibly longer), the room will miss the versatility that he brings. If you look at the secondary, it’s solid, but cornerbacks Martin Emerson and Greg Newsome are looking to have bounce-back years after the two had down years.

Overall, this is a unit that can get back around the top 10, maybe the five range if they get contributions from key members on the team.

Offense will look competent and not like what it was last season

No need to rehash the Cleveland offense from last season. The unit as a whole was bad, but if you look at it now, it is not as rough as it was last year. Everyone knows how hectic the quarterback room looks with two vets in Kenny Pickett & Joe Flacco and two rookies in Shedeur Sanders & Kenny Pickett being in the room.

The running back and wide receiver rooms are young and inexperienced but clearly talented. Despite those two issues, both rooms seem eager and hungry to prove themselves. It’s rare, but we have seen weak position groups, especially those two, overachieve and outperform their expectations.

Going back to the quarterback room, there is a lot of uncertainty about who will be the starter. Pickett? Flacco? Sanders or Gabriel? No one knows...
