The NFL Draft rumors are flying today!
With almost 24 hours left until the 2025 NFL Draft, the rumors continue to fly about what the Chicago Bears and other teams will do.
Draft Ashton Jeanty? Take Tyler Warren? Trade down?
All of it is on the table.
According to one New York Giants insider, “all of it” includes potentially moving up.
The New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard reported getting a text from a “league source” saying the Bears are looking to trade for a higher pick rather than standing pat at No. 10 (pun intended).
Meanwhile, Leonard added six teams within the top nine “are open to moving back” ahead of Thursday’s draft.
Interesting. Here’s why.
For one, Leonard’s Giants have a vested interest in drumming up fervor for teams to tee up in a draft where it seems few really want to do that. Besides Cam Ward, no other quarterbacks are worth moving up for in the top 10.
The Giants and Browns have reportedly been weighing trading down to see if they can get picks in return for the rights to draft Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter. And it certainly makes sense for teams like the Jaguars and Raiders to move down if they can, as they’ll still have a chance at good players in the lower end of the top 10 and early teens.
Enter the Bears.
First of all, let’s be clear: trading up into the top 10 would not be a good use of Chicago’s resources. They should be able to get a perfectly fine player at 10, like potentially Warren, Kelvin Banks, or Colston Loveland, and then keep their future picks to help bolster a roster that still needs work.
But…if the Bears believe they can trade up for a below-market price to get a player they love—*stares in Ashton Jeanty*—there’s an argument to be made for doing it.
For one, it would almost certainly cost less to move up in this year’s draft compared to years prior given the talent pool. Secondly, doing it for a non-premium position might also lower some cost.
The key to remember: the Bears are probably checking on every possible option. So the idea of them trading up shouldn’t spook Chicago fans just yet.
But if it happens…it would officially be the boldest move of Ryan Poles’ career as a bears general manager.
Hold onto your butts.
