Confidence or folly? Lions coach dismissive of Browns defense heading into Week 4

The Cleveland Browns take on the Detroit Lions in Week 4 of the 2025 NFL season with some renewed excitement and hope after knocking off the Green Bay Packers in Week 3. The Lions hope the Browns can take care of business in Week 5, in London, against Detroit’s other NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings.

Before that happens, Cleveland travels up to Michigan to face a Lions team that lost both coordinators, is coming off a late road game on Monday Night Football and could be set up for a trap game against a team that has had close to zero offense.

Oh yeah, the Browns defense is one of the best in the NFL, which could give them a chance in most games this season. After years of struggling to stop the run, Cleveland has faced three quality running backs in the first three weeks of the season and shut all three down:

  • Week 1 – Chase Brown – 21 carries, 43 yards, 2.0 yards average
  • Week 2 – Derrick Henry – 11 carries, 23 yards, 2.1 yards average
  • Week 3 – Josh Jacobs – 16 carries, 30 yards, 1.9 yards average

So, was it confidence or folly for Detroit’s offensive coordinator to minimize the success that the Browns defense has had against running backs?

The Lions run game looked very familiar in Week 1, with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combining for 44 yards on 20 carries against the same Packers team that Cleveland’s Quinshon Judkins had 94 yards on 18 carries last week. Detroit did explode on the ground in Weeks 2 and 3, which gives Morton a lot of confidence in his group.

Given the performance on each side, Lions rushing offense versus Browns rushing defense could decide who wins in Week 4.

Do you think Morton was just presenting confidence in his run game or was his statement a foolish shot at Cleveland’s defense?
