Commanders Vs. Ravens (preseason game three) – Studs and Duds
Hogs Haven Hogs Haven

Another preseason game, another butt-whooping!

Dan Quinn can NOT be happy with the performance of this team during the three preseason games. Thankfully, training camp is over and preparation for the up=coming season is now under way. However, if Washington comes out slow against the Giants, there may be some questions that need to be answered.

On a slightly positive notes, the Commanders, for the most part, came out of the preseason fairly heathy, and a few guys who have been banged-up recently returned.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.

Studs:

  • Chris Rodriguez – CRod continues to shine and we can easily see why this staff was able to move on from Brian Robinson. Rodriguez has the vision and burst Robinson was severely lacking. He finished the game with five carries for very respectable 34 yards.

  • Jordan Magee – Magee is a run-and-hit linebacker and those skills were on display against the Ravens, albeit for a limited number of snaps. Still, he popped when he was on the field, and getting him back healthy is big for this defense. He recorded four tackles, three of which were solo.

  • Luke McCaffrey – Luke McCaffrey made the most of his opportunity Saturday afternnon, catching all five of his targets for 23 yards. He showed some good run-after-catch ability, blocked well and even made a tackle on special teams.

  • Ale Kaho – Kaho continues to make plays when he’s in the game. He’s a good athlete with nice size and he’s been excellent with his open-field tackling. He’s outshone his rookie Bruin teammate so far this preseason. Washington needs to figure a way to get him on the 53-man roster. He finished the game with seven tackles (six of them solo) with one for a loss.

  • Tyler Owens – Owens had a handful of nice plays against the Ravens, including a tackle-for-loss and nice pass defended down the left sideline.

Duds:

  • Sam Hartman – Hartman is almost unwatchable. His has zero zip on his passes, zero pocket awareness and poor accuracy and anticipation. It’s really sad because coaches can’t get a fair evaluation of our receivers with him in the game. He was responsible for two interceptions and a lost fumble.

  • Matt Gay – The kicking woes continue. Matt Gay is not the answer. It’s time to head to Europe and find some soccer player with accuracy and range.

  • K.J. Osborn – With four players essentially fighting for one roster spot, Osborn can’t afford to have drops like this.

Notes:

  • Colson Yankoff had a beautiful 52 yard catch and run. He also missed a block on a cross-buck in the backfield on fourth down.

  • Sheldon Day is outplaying Eddie Goldman

  • Josh Johnson may not be quite as bad as Sam Hartman, but he’s clearly not good.

  • Tim McKay may need to go to the practice squad. He’s not...
