The Washington Commanders held their first practice of the week as they prepare to host the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Dan Quinn talked to reporters earlier, and discussed some of the injuries the team has been dealing with. CB Marshon Lattimore (ACL) and WR Luke McCaffrey (collarbone) were placed on IR yesterday, ending their seasons. Quinn said Mike Sainristil and Jonathan Jones would get more playing time with Lattimore done for the season.
QB Jayden Daniels’ second season has been filled with disappointment, and he’s now dealing with the third injury that will keep him off the field. He suffered an ugly elbow dislocation after landing on his left arm while bracing from a tackle in the 4th quarter vs the Seahawks. He wasn’t placed on IR along with Lattimore and McCaffrey yesterday, and Quinn said they will be meeting today to evaluate his options, before giving an update in the next day or two.
The Commanders signed WR Treylon Burks and DT Sheldon Day from the practice squad earlier, as they continue to shift the roster to deal with the growing injury list. Terry McLaurin is still dealing with the quad injury that he re-aggravated vs the Chiefs two weeks ago, and will likely miss at least another week. He could miss the international game in Spain the following week, and return after the Week 12 bye. Burks was a former first-round pick, and was active vs the Seahawks, getting one target for a 14-yard reception.
Sheldon Day was elevated for the third, and final time, from the practice squad, and needed to get signed to the 53-man roster to be active on game day. Washington has been dealing with a lot of injuries in a lot of areas, but the defensive line has been hit particularly hard. They’ve already placed three DEs on IR(Deatrich Wise, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Dorance Armstrong), and were using DTs like Johnny Newton, and LBs like Frankie Luvu on the DL. Newton is still dealing with an ankle injury he suffered vs the Chiefs, but still played 33% of the snaps on defense Sunday night. DT Eddie Goldman suffered a concussion vs the Seahawks, but was back on the field(limited) today. Sheldon Day has been elevated the last three weeks, and he’s averaging 33.2% of the defensive snaps.
The Washington Commanders suffered a trio of new injuries to their secondary this week, another area that has seen players in and out of the lineup. Safeties Tyler Owens and Quan Martin both suffered hamstring injuries, and didn’t practice today. Second-round rookie CB Trey Amos was limited with a new hip injury, and wearing a non-contact jersey.
Tight end Colson Yankoff (hamstring) has missed the last two games, but was back on the field as a limited participant. Rookie RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt was also in a non-contact jersey today, but that was only because he had some dental work done recently.
