According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Indianapolis Colts worked out six players on Tuesday: defensive ends Deslin Alexandre, Shaq Barrett, Seth Coleman, and Jasheen Davis, as well as linebackers D.J. Johnson and Benton Whitley:
Obviously, it was a defensive end heavy group, with a pair of key rotational defensive linemen Samson Ebukam (knee) and Tyquan Lewis (groin) dealing with injuries from last Sunday’s road win against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Ebukam is reportedly expected to “miss multiple weeks” with an MCL injury, meaning reinforcements may very well be needed during his absence.
The biggest name on this list is obviously Shaq Barrett, the now 32-year old former 2x Super Bowl Champion, 1x NFL 2nd-Team All-Pro, and 2x NFL Pro Bowl pass rusher for the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who has 59.0 career sacks during his 10-year pro career. He appeared in just one game for the Bucs last year, recording a single tackle.
However, that’s not the defensive end that the Colts ultimately signed for additional depth.
Instead, following his workout, the Colts elected to sign Seth Coleman, a 6’3”, 246 pound undrafted rookie free agent who previously spent time with the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason, to their practice squad. He was a former Honorable Mention All-Big Ten with the Illinois Fighting Illini back in 2022 and 2023 and team captain in 2024.
Here’s his NFL.com Draft Profile:
Overview
Slender 3-4 outside linebacker who is a good athlete but lacks exciting tape. Coleman will struggle to hold his ground against downhill blockers when he’s centered up, but he does a nice job of creating slippery angles to work off the block and find the action. He has some bend at the top of the rush but not enough upfield take-off to really maximize that bend. While his production won’t stand out, he uses active hands and long arms to make the most of his snaps. Coleman has a chance to become an NFL backup.
The Colts waived cornerback Keenan Garber from their practice squad in a corresponding taxi-man squad move.
