Could the Colts end up with one of the league’s better productive young safeties in this year’s free agency class?

According to CBS Sports Jordan Dajani, the Indianapolis Colts should prioritize Las Vegas Raiders safety Trevon Moehrig as ‘their one external free agent’ this offseason:

Indianapolis Colts - S Trevon Moehrig

Defensive back is arguably the biggest need for the Colts this offseason, and Moehrig would be a welcomed addition. In 2024, he recorded a career-high 104 combined tackles and 10 passes defensed to go along with two interceptions and a sack. An underrated player to watch.

Going to the Raiders with the #43rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the 6’2,” 202 pound defensive back was a prospect name that was connected to the Colts as a potential target throughout that year’s pre-draft evaluation process—as that class’s consensus top safety.

The Colts ultimately ended up with Kwity Paye (#21) and Dayo Odeyingbo (Pick #54) sandwiching outside of where Moehrig was ultimately selected by the Raiders.

The former 2x All-First-Team Big-12 and Jim Thorpe Award recipient out of TCU is coming off a career season for the Raiders in which he recorded 104 tackles (64 solo), 2 interceptions, 10 passes defensed, a sack, and 2 fumble recoveries during all 17 starts in 2024.

Last season, Moehrig was graded out as PFF’s 36th best ranked safety with a +67.5 overall grade—highlighted by a +87.5 run defense grade, which was the 6th highest in the league.

Still only 25-years-old, perhaps most importantly for the Colts, he has experience playing as a one and two-high safety—meaning he’d theoretically provide new Indianapolis veteran defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo some versatility in the backend of a revamped Horseshoe secondary for an improved variety of looks:
