The Indianapolis Colts will miss the playoffs this season after starting 8-2, and there could be a lot of variables that went into their downfall. One of those things is injuries, and it happened to key players on both sides of the ball. Daniel Jones going down for the season made the Colts pivot to other options, and they brought Philip Rivers back on the field.
On defense, Sauce Gardner dealt with calf injuries, and he recently suffered another in their latest game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Though this is a repeated occurrence and the Colts are not playing for much in their season finale against the Houston Texans, Gardner has not been ruled out for the game.
Head coach Shane Steichen was asked about the decision, and he basically said that Gardner has to be 100% to go.
“Yeah, that’s a good question. I mean, he’s gotta be really good to go on Sunday, I’ll say that,” Steichen said via James Boyd of The Athletic.
Though he hasn’t been ruled out, there is a good chance that Gardner just doesn’t play. That makes the most sense for him and his future health, and for the organization after they invested in a lot to acquire him during the trade deadline this season.
Gardner is one of the better cornerbacks in the league, but he wasn’t able to show much of what he could with the Colts. He will have a better chance next season, and the hope is that the team can get back to what they were during the first half of the season.
As of now, they will try to end the season off strong against the Texans, a divisional opponent who had an opposite fate. The Texans started the season 0-3, but they came back in the second half of the season and found themselves in the playoffs.
