The Indianapolis Colts are getting prepped in the offseason so they can build on the success they had at the start of last season before injuries began to creep up on them. Sauce Gardner was one of their biggest acquisitions at the trade deadline last season, and even he wasn’t able to show all that he could do because of an injury. The hope is that changes, but first, he has to inform everyone of his real age.
Yes, his real age.
There are several outlets that have Gardner’s birthday listed as Aug. 31, 2000, which would make him 25 years old. The real story is that Gardner is actually 24, as his birth certificate, license and other official documents have his birthdate listed as Aug. 31, 2001.
“I’m 24!” Gardner said jokingly via James Boyd of The Athletic. “It’s crazy that I’m even being asked this.”
Places such as The Athletic’s 2022 NFL Draft guide, ESPN.com, Pro Football Reference and Madden have his age wrong.
“It’s wrong in Madden, too? That’s crazy because I never checked,” Gardner said. “Because when it comes to the paperwork and everything I’ve signed, it all says ’01. So, I don’t know where or how it got messed up unless people just get it straight from Google.”
There’s no telling where the mix-up happened, but it’s a good thing that Gardner can clear up the confusion with some actual documents.
“Clubs notify us of any incorrect birthdates that would have appeared on their college sites when a player signs,” NFL chief spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Athletic. “Players also self-verify their birthdates and other personal information through a player portal.”
This isn’t the first time that an athlete has had his birthdate mixed up. When Buddy Hield publicly celebrated his 26th birthday, everyone thought that he was 25. At that time, he was listed as 25 on the NBA website. Just like Gardner, he was able to clear the air about his real age.
