According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, on Monday, the Indianapolis Colts worked out former Super Bowl Champion veteran safety Jordan Whitehead, who missed all of last season recovering from a neck surgery following a January of 2024 car accident when he was headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice facility:
Originally a 2018 4th round pick of Tampa Bay, the 29-year-old safety has also spent time with the New York Jets organization (2022-23). During his 7-year NFL career, he has appeared in 105 games, making 101 career starts.
He won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers back in 2020, when he made 16 starts for their title winning defense.
Per PFF, he earned a +58.0 overall grade in 12 starts for Tampa Bay’s defense in his most recent season played, which was the 2024 campaign before he sat out all of last season.
The Colts safety room currently consists of projected starters Cam Bynum and rookie AJ Haulcy and their primary backups Hunter Wohler, Jonathan Owens, and Juanyeh Thomas, as well as holdovers from last year’s squad such as Daniel Scott, Ben Nikkel, and Trey Washington. There’s also undrafted rookie Austin Brown.
While their positional room is far from settled for the eventual 53-man active roster, it appears to have more depth than it appeared to have last offseason at this time. Still, it can’t hurt to kick the tires on a proven safety option such as Whitehead, who has Super Bowl winning experience for an otherwise fairly young Colts unit.
