Indianapolis Colts 3rd-year quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. suffered a finger injury near midway through the first quarter of the team’s preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens and will not return to the game.

With 7:34 left in the first quarter, Ravens linebacker David Ojabo came unblocked off the right side of the Colts offensive line, with no starting right tackle Braden Smith playing tonight, and laid a big hit on Richardson:

Richardson could be seen on the sideline trying to grip a football with his right hand, which of course, is part of his throwing arm.

However, with this being early preseason, Colts QB1 challenger Daniel Jones came in earlier than initially expected in relief of Richardson, who was shut down prematurely for the evening.

Richardson finished his limited preseason debut, completing 2 of 3 pass attempts for 21 total passing yards, with no rushing attempts.

Typically, a team in preseason wouldn’t play their starting quarterback without the starting offensive line.

The Colts are starting a pair of backup offensive tackles tonight, which it looks like there was some miscommunication with rookie right tackle Jalen Travis on the sack where Richardson got injured.

Having a blitzer come untouched right into your starting quarterback’s wheelhouse shouldn’t happen.

At any rate, it’ll be interesting to see whether Richardson plays in preseason again, or if he’ll be rested until potentially the team’s regular season opener on Week 1 (September 7th) against the Miami Dolphins—assuming his finger injury isn’t a long-term one.
