Stampede Blue
The life of an NFL fan from May through most of July is rough. Free agency is over, the draft has concluded, and training camp seems like it will never get here. The end is in sight as we approach mid-July, but luckily there has been something to take one’s mind off the lack of Indianapolis Colts football. It may not be your first “football” of choice, but the world’s football is coming through in a major way to fill the void.
The World Cup happens every four years, and while soccer, as we call it in the States, isn’t as big here as other spots, being a host country has made it all the more interesting and exciting. If you have watched any of the action, it isn’t hard to understand how this version of football dominates the world. The ball is always moving and shots on goal will make you hold your breath. Seeing the world come together has been remarkable.
Although they have been eliminated, there was an incredible surge in support for team USA. This was their deepest run since 2002. Advancing in the knockout round gave fans something to cheer for and be excited about in the years to come. The games are ramping up as we are down to the last eight and huge international names are becoming better known in American households. From England’s Harry Kane to Kylian Mbappé of France, the world’s best are being introduced to Americans for the first time in many cases. Let’s not forget about Erling Haaland. He has taken the United States by storm as he dominates social media with his unusual style and flair.
Yes, this is a Colts blog, and we talk about American football here. I get it. American football news is slow, and the world’s football is hot. White hot. Maybe I am into it more than most, but even objective reports are pondering whether this has been one of the best World Cups in recent memory. It has been that good. So, take in a few World Cup games. The stakes are rising, and at the very least, you’ll buy yourself a little more time before the Colts season gets going.
