DeForest Buckner was limited to just 10 games in 2025 as a neck injury presented an issue he was unable to play through without surgery. A lengthy rehab process has been ongoing for several months, but a tentative return date is being targeted.
Buckner was not able to participate in any spring practices. The three-time Pro Bowler has nevertheless managed to make progress in recovery. As a result, managing to take part in at least some of training camp could be possible in this case. In general, suiting up in time for Week 1 remains the goal.
“What happened to him was difficult, but he’s the hardest worker I know and he’s putting all the time and effort in to get back on the field with his teammates,” head coach Shane Steichen said about Buckner (via ESPN’s Stephen Holder). “Obviously, we’ll be smart with the situation, monitor him through training camp. I know the goal is to be ready for Week 1, and so I know he’s working that way and we’ll see where it goes.”
Having Buckner back to full strength by the fall would of course be critical for Indianapolis. The former 49er has served as a defensive anchor during each of his six Colts seasons, operating as a full-time starter at the defensive tackle spot. Buckner will be counted on to remain a key presence along the interior against the run and pass upon returning to health, considering he has totaled 43 sacks and 59 tackles for loss with Indianapolis.
The Colts have reshaped much of their defense, and improved play on that side of the ball compared to DC Lou Anarumo‘s first year in place will be sought out. Stronger play against the pass in particular will be key, and improved cornerback health would be welcomed moving forward. Another important factor would obviously be a return from Buckner and its resultant boost to the team’s pass rush.
2026 represents Buckner’s age-32 season. It is also the final year of his contract, so a full campaign would go a long way in ensuring his Colts tenure continues beyond 2026. Buckner’s ability to continue progressing in his recovery through the summer will be worth watching closely.
