On Monday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that the team has resigned cornerback David Long Jr. back to the team’s practice squad.
The Colts had an opening on their taxi-man team after starting cornerback Chavarius Ward was placed on injured reserve from the active 53-man roster, and veteran running back Ameer Abdullah was signed from their practice squad in a corresponding roster move this past weekend.
Originally a 2019 3rd round pick of the Los Angeles Rams, the 5,11”, 196 pound cornerback has been well traveled in his early NFL career, having also spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and most recently, the Colts organization.
Long Jr. has appeared in 79 career games, making 12 starts during his 6-year NFL career.
He was signed to Indy’s practice squad in September of last year before being elevated to their active roster and appearing in 13 games during 2024.
During this past training camp, he was placed on injured reserve before being released in early August.
Obviously, the Colts already have a very depleted cornerback room, having lost rookie Justin Walley for the season, seen veteran stopgap Xavien Howard abruptly retire, and placed both projected outside starters Jaylon Jones (hamstring) and Charvarius Ward (concussion) on injured reserve, as well as veteran slot corner Mike Hilton (shoulder) on practice squad injured reserve with their respective injuries.
