The Fox Sports analyst says that his sources are reporting LA wants to stock pile picks by trading the Giants’ pick
Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports is reporting that his sources say the Rams want the third overall pick from the New York Giants in exchange for QB Matthew Stafford. Trade rumors about LA’s veteran quarterback have been running rampant since the end of the 2024 season, but have picked up more steam lately with the recent news that the Los Angeles would be moving on from WR Cooper Kupp, a favorite target and teammate of Stafford.
Cowherd spoke about Stafford and the potential trade to New York on his show Thursday:
“What the Rams want, I am told, they want the Giants’ first-round pick at No. 3,” he said. “So they probably want a first, a second, a first, a third, but you’ve got to pay Stafford if you’re the Giants. You have to give him a new deal. They’ll probably get a first and a fourth, but let’s just talk about that No. 3 pick. The Rams want that No. 3 pick in the draft because they’re drafting way later. They want to take that pick, move down, and get more picks. Why? So they have extra picks next year when they have to move up to get a quarterback.”
Cowherd then pitched that the Rams would use the third overall pick to trade down and amass picks for the 2026 draft in an effort to be able to move up and take a QB in a stronger quarterback class. He also concluded by saying that Los Angeles could then go sign expected free agent QB Aaron Rodgers to a one or two-year deal.
“He needs a rehab. Got a house in Malibu. West Coast guy,” Cowherd said of Rodgers. “By the way, in a division with Geno Smith, Kyler Murray, Brock Purdy. Aaron Rodgers’ last 10 games last year, he was good. And remember, that was with a third-tier coaching staff. Now he gets McVay? An established O-line? An excellent young defense? Remember, Matt LaFleur is the OC with Sean McVay. He’s been in that system before, so Aaron knows the system with the Rams. I believe Aaron is craving infrastructure, stability, a head coach he respects, organizational excellence.”
It’s a bit crazy to think that the Giants would be willing to give up the third overall pick for a 37-year-old quarterback that would need to be extended and paid, even one of Stafford’s talent. However, the part about the Rams stock piling picks for 2026 and having interest in Rodgers seems somewhat believable in the case they were to move on from Stafford.
Still, as unrealistic as it sounds, Cowherd doubled down on his information, saying:
“This sounds crazy, the Matt Stafford to the Giants thing is real, I’m told. I’m told they like Matt Stafford, but he’s old. … Rams want inexpensive, rental quarterback for one year.”
