The Miami Dolphins are still scrambling for answers following Sunday’s 33-27 loss to the New England Patriots.
Miami fell to 0-2 after dropping the AFC East contest at home, leading questions over Mike McDaniel’s job security to intensify. Some critics latched onto a peculiar statement from the Dolphins head coach in his post-game press conference.
“To win games, you have to win the game,” McDaniel said. “Not lose the game, honestly.”
McDaniel made the Perd Hapley-like observation while lamenting a sloppy final drive. The Dolphins drove the ball to New England’s 26-yard line before committing consecutive false start and delay of game penalties.
The 42-year-old believed the Dolphins squandered their chance at a comeback with those “critical” mistakes.
“That’s kind of where the frustration lies for me is it wasn’t deciding that cost us, or a late play call, which happens at times,” McDaniel said. “But this was not one of those times. I got the play call in, but I need to do a better job supervising the orchestration within our multiple personnel groups.”
McDaniel took full accountability for the team’s miscues. Miami committed 10 penalties during Sunday’s loss.
“I will make sure that things that should already be ironed out moving forward,” he declared. “We will not fall victim to the same thing again, (and) we’ll put the appropriate emphasis on that because it was not acceptable. We had the opportunity to win the game, and we robbed it from ourselves.”
The Dolphins have a short week to prepare for a “Thursday Night Football” road matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
