The Cleveland Browns have already been dealt a massive injury blow, with star cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. feared to have suffered a season-ending injury.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, Martin Emerson suffered an Achilles injury after being carted off in Tuesday’s practice. Though the Browns are awaiting further testing, they already fear he suffered “a significant tear,” which would surely end his season.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com shared the heartbreaking video of Emerson being carted off the field, with a towel over his head:

The Mississippi State product, who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract, was selected by the Browns in round three (68th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. Emerson has exceeded expectations and emerged as one of the league’s more underrated cornerbacks, with four interceptions and 34 pass breakups over his first three seasons.

Sources to me and @RapSheet: #Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. suffered what’s an Achilles injury in today’s practice. He’ll undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the injury but the expectation is it’s a significant tear. pic.twitter.com/q11qHerFnM

The advanced stats from Pro Football Focus show just how valuable Emerson has been to the Cleveland defense. He’s allowed a 53.2 completion percentage and a passer rating of only 76.5 when targeted (including a ridiculous 46.3 mark in 2023).

It’s hard to get recognition when you play on the same defense as future Hall of Famer Myles Garrett and Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward, but Martin Emerson has been a mainstay in Cleveland’s secondary since his rookie year.

This is an awful blow for the Browns, and it’s hard not to feel sorry for Emerson.

Martin Emerson Will Still Get Paid In 2026

Emerson may miss the entire 2025 season, but he should still attract plenty of interest in 2026, be it from Cleveland or another team.

Clubs are always paying top dollar for above-average cornerbacks in today’s NFL, so Emerson should still get a multi-year deal worth well over $10 million annually when his rookie deal is up.
