It’s a new year, but we’re still seeing the same old non-competitive Cleveland Browns, who you can practically rule out of playoff contention right now. It’s a story that’s become all too common in the post-Jim Brown era of Cleveland and one Myles Garrett has been forced to accept.
Garrett is unquestionably one of the NFL’s best players, likely in the top-five overall, earning first-team All-Pro honors in four of his nine seasons. But he’s stuck on a Browns team that’s reached the postseason just twice in his near-decade-long tenure with the team.
By stuck, we mean signed to a $160 million contract after he requested a trade. Though, after the Browns’ ugly 2-6 start, some wonder if Garrett wishes he’d never signed that extension with Cleveland this past offseason.
Now, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes it’s time for the Browns to “really think” about whether trading Garrett is in the best interest of their team. He began with the question of, will the Browns trade Garrett? The event seems unlikely, but should they?
Just think of the type of trade return the Browns could get. Breer speculates that trading Garrett could potentially net the Browns another first-round pick in 2026, one in 2027, plus a ’26 second and ’27 third. That would give the Browns a total of 10 selections in the first five rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, further filling in their roster with young talent brimming with potential.
While Garrett is signed to an expensive contract, he’s also one of the league’s most consistent superstars, recording 10 or more sacks in each of his past eight seasons. Garrett has also shown he doesn’t need to be surrounded by stars to thrive, which should make him a fit for any defense, especially contenders who likely already have a roster filled with more talent than Cleveland.
