Cleveland Browns Sign Pro Bowl Quarterback Before First Preseason Game

The Cleveland Browns are just days away from their first preseason game, which occurs on Friday, August 8. Sometime between now and Friday’s exhibition matchup against the Carolina Panthers, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will have to name a starting quarterback, even if the move is not permanent.

But now, the Browns have added another arm into the mix.

On Monday, shortly after the team unveiled its first official depth chart for the 2025-26 NFL season, the Browns announced they had signed another quarterback, Tyler Huntley.

Huntley is a former Pro Bowl QB, though that should come with a gigantic asterisk, as he was only named an alternate after a long list of other options turned the honor down. Still, Huntley, 27, brings experience, plus dual-threat mobility to the Browns’ offense.

Considering Joe Flacco is already 40 years old, our guess is that the longtime vet won’t see much action in the preseason. With Kenny Pickett only recently coming back from a hamstring injury, the Browns may have wanted another veteran camp arm who can help facilitate the offense and help show the two rookie newcomers the ropes in the NFL.

Or maybe the Browns are legitimately considering parting ways with one of Flacco, Pickett, or rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Adding Huntley now allows the Browns to evaluate all their options for the next month until rosters have to be pared down from 90 to 53 players.

Huntley spent parts of last season with the Browns, but he did not ever appear in a game for them. Still, his arrival brings a familiar face to coach Stefanski’s offense, and he should already have a good feel for the scheme thanks to last year’s time spent on task.
