Cleveland Browns could take extremely unconventional route at quarterback

The Cleveland Browns have four quarterbacks on the roster. Five if we count Deshaun Watson, whose status for the 2025 NFL season remains unknown after re-tearing his Achilles tendon in December and requiring another surgery.

For now, the Browns have four contestants competing for their starting QB job, led by former Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco and former first-round pick Kenny Pickett. The Browns also have a nice mix of youth with the injection of third and fifth-round rookies Dillon Gabiel plus Shedeur Sanders.

All four quarterbacks were added to the roster this offseason, with Flacco arriving in free agency, Pickett by trade, and the latter two via the NFL Draft. Most would suggest four is too many for one NFL team.

Yet, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns could very well kick off their season with four quarterbacks on the roster.

That’s a stark change in opinion from before minicamp kicked off. Yet, after Sanders made a strong impression on the coaching staff, along with already being invested in the other three, the Browns could slowly be changing their roster-building mindset.

Most teams keep two or three quarterbacks on the roster, with another QB learning on the practice squad. Yet, after being impressed by what Sanders has shown early on, the Browns may not want to risk trying to squeeze him onto the practice squad too.
