One week after seemingly reviving their chances in the AFC North by beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati Bengals lost at home to the New York Jets, giving the Steelers a big boost in their chances of winning the AFC North.
Not only did the Bengals lose 39-38 to Justin Fields and the Jets, they lost star defensive end Trey Hendrickson to a hip injury, which he aggravated during the game and was ruled out.
Without Hendrickson available, the Bengals gave up 23 points in the fourth quarter, to let the Jets come back and take the lead.
Down 14 points in the fourth quarter, head coach Aaron Glenn elected to go for two after a Breece Hall touchdown, converting when Justin Fields threw to Isaiah Davis. Then after a Hall halfback pass to Mason Taylor for a second score, a Nick Folk extra point gave New York the lead.
Fields wasn’t even expected to start after being benched last week, and owner Woody Johnson blamed his play for the team’s 0-6 start. But Tyrod Taylor was ruled out with a knee injury, giving Fields another chance to start.
“God is good, that’s all I’ve got to say,” Fields said to Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS after the win. “All the trials and tribulations we got this offseason, from last week to this week, all the noise around, I’m just gonna keep it simple. God is good.”
The Steelers will have a two-game margin in the division lead before their Sunday Night Football game against the Green Bay Packers.
