The Cincinnati Bengals have made a surprising roster move ahead of the 2025 NFL season, releasing veteran running back Zach Moss.
The decision concludes a brief spell impacted by injury and comes just one year after Moss signed a two-year deal worth $8 million to augment the team’s backfield in the wake of Joe Mixon’s exit.
Moss started last season as the Bengals’ No. 1 back but fractured his C6 vertebra in three places in Week 8. He played through numbness and the loss of feeling in his fingers, but was eventually placed on the injured reserve.
The 27-year-old played in eight games for Cincinnati, rushing for 242 yards and two touchdowns, also snagging 23 receptions for 187 receiving yards and a TD.
The Florida native, a standout at Utah, had a breakout campaign with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, rushing for 794 yards and five scores while filling in for Jonathan Taylor.
He restructured his contract with the Bengals in April, agreeing to have his salary reduced to $1.8 million. But he could not regain full fitness in time for training camp, leading to his release.
The move will cost the team $1.88 million in dead money but also frees up $1.2 million in cap space.
Zack Moss’ career totals include 3,028 scrimmage yards and 21 TDs in spells with the Buffalo Bills, Colts, and Bengals.
With him gone, Cincinnati will look to Chase Brown as their main RB option following his exploits from last season, which saw him register 1,350 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns.
Other options include Samaje Perine, Tahj Brooks, Gary Brightwell, Kendall Milton, and Quali Conley.
