For the second time in his seven years as the Cincinnati Bengals‘ head coach, Zac Taylor’s franchise quarterback has suffered a serious injury that wiped out most of his season. To no surprise, the Bengals are struggling greatly without Joe Burrow.
The Bengals have gone just 3-7 this season, and while they’re still hoping Burrow returns in the next week or two, their odds of making another postseason appearance have diminished greatly. With Taylor’s Bengals on the verge of missing the playoffs for the third season in a row, some are wondering if Cincinnati is pondering a coaching change.
Specifically, ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that his NFL sources are “watching the situation in Cincinnati” regarding Taylor’s job security. Taylor, who has led the Bengals to a 49-59-1 record in eight seasons hasn’t been able to win without Burrow. His record without Burrow? Just 9-28.
Though, most teams would have a hard time winning without their best player, so Taylor is not alone in that sector. Still, would Burrow getting hurt be enough for the Bengals to cast their head coach aside?
The Bengals are known for not wanting to pay two head coaches at once, so Taylor’s job security could depend on whether he has any guaranteed money left on his contract. Or, if he even has a contract that runs through 2026.
Taylor and the team surely know the specifics of the contract, but for the rest of us, it’s a guessing game. No matter what, the best way for Taylor to keep his job is by finishing the season strong, and his Bengals have lost their past three matchups.
At some point, the team needs to decide whether Taylor is holding them back, or if he’s a key part of Burrow’s success, when healthy.
