Dating back to early this offseason, Trey Hendrickson has been vocal about his discontent with the Cincinnati Bengals, so much so that he requested a trade after his best season yet. However, despite granting Hendrickson’s wish, they have been unable to find a trade partner.
Yet, the NFL’s reigning sack leader and first-time All-Pro selection is heading into the final year of his contract, and he wants a raise. With the best pass-rushers making as much as $40 million per season, Hendrickson’s $18.6 million cap hit for 2025 looks like a bargain.
Before the Bengals started mandatory minicamp practices, Hendrickson’s camp put out word that he wasn’t afraid of missing games if that’s what it takes to get his message across. Yet, both sides hope to avoid any scenario that keeps Hendrickson out of action.
Now, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bengals and Hendrickson have “resumed communication on his contract.” ESPN’s Ben Baby adds that “for the first time in several months, there is some optimism surrounding” Hendrickson’s future in Cincinnati.
Hendrickson has already missed three days of the Bengals’ mandatory practice sessions this offseason, which means the team can fine him up to roughly $105,000.
As much as the Bengals would love to get Hendrickson back on the field, they’re also still trying to get their rookie first-round selection, Shemar Stewart, under contract too.
