After back-to-back 9-8 seasons, the Cincinnati Bengals are looking for a way to get over the hump. Defensive coordinator changes, such as going from Lou Anarumo to Al Golden, may help do the trick. Yet, the Bengals’ roster still has room for improvement too.
One of the team’s weaknesses in recent years has been the lack of a reliable tight end who can benefit from the single coverage advantage of being teammates with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. That may be changing.
According to many reports, the Bengals are set to sign tight end Noah Fant, who was recently released by the Seattle Seahawks. Last year, Fant caught 48 passes for a respectable 500 yards and a touchdown. Being paired with Joe Burrow gives Fant the chance at an even bigger season.
Fant drew interest from many other teams, such as the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, before ultimately deciding the Bengals were the best opportunity for him. He’ll presumably be competing with Mike Gesicki and Drew Sample for opportunities.
A former first-round pick, Fant is still just 27 years old. After spending three seasons with the Denver Broncos, Fant was included in the Russell Wilson trade involving Seattle.
He’s still chasing a bigger season than the 673-yard campaign he had in 2020, his second year in the NFL. Who knows, with a bit of luck, Fant might just be able to re-ignite his career in Cincinnati with his new QB.
