It appears as though the Seattle Seahawks may not be facing Christian McCaffrey on Sunday.
Per Noah Furtado of The San Francisco Chronicle, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that his star running back will be marked as questionable for Sunday’s season opener. Furtado also noted that McCaffrey was not active in practice today, a glaring sign that he may not appear for San Francisco to begin the year.
CMC claimed after practice that he was feeling great and plans to play.
McCaffrey’s health has been a major source of concern for the Niners over the last year or so, having only appeared in four games in 2024. The then-28-year-old running back was placed on injured reserve to start the season, and appeared to be out of the lineup for nearly the entire season upon learning of a frightening development as he attempted to heal from an Achilles tendon injury.
Nevertheless, McCaffrey was cleared to play in November, facing the Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium in Week 11. McCaffrey went on to appear in three more games for San Francisco in 2024, finishing with 202 rushing yards on 50 carries before being placed on IR for a second time.
McCaffrey is one of three RBs on the 49ers’ injury report, along with Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James. Of the three, Guerendo was the only full participant in practice on Thursday.
